Tervel Zamfirov won the parallel giant slalom (PGS) and Radoslav Yankov is third! So for the first time in history there are two Bulgarians on the podium of the FIS World Cup – this success was achieved in front of a home crowd on the slope “Alberto Tomba” in Bansko! On January 17th, 2026 the Bulgarian athletes remained outside the podium, but a day later Zamfirov and Yankov compensated with a perfect ride in the finals.
“I have always dreamed and hoped that my first World Cup victory would be in Bansko, so for me this is a dream come true. The competition was very even, the conditions were at a high level, the audience motivated me a lot. At the start it was almost like getting wings when I heard the Bulgarian fan crowd at the grand stands below,” said Tervel after winning the race. In the final, he was faster by 0.15 seconds than the Austrian Fabian Obmann, despite riding on the more uncomfortable red course of the Alberto Tomba track. In the first round, the 20-year-old Zamfirov eliminated three-time world champion Andreas Prommegger. In the quarterfinals, he dealt with world champion Maurizio Bormolini, who made a bad mistake on the course. In the semifinals, Zamfirov eliminated Radoslav Yankov. The veteran Yankov made a series of excellent rides, as in the round of 16 he eliminated Italian Aaron March, who is currently the leader in the overall World Cup ranking. In the quarterfinals Zamfirov even overtook Olympic champion Benjamin Karl from Austria. In the end, Radoslav Yankov won third place on the podium.
In the women’s race, Tervel’s sister – Malena Zamfirova reached the quarterfinals and remained fifth in the final standings. Her path to the podium was interrupted by Germany’s Ramona Theresia Hofmeister, who came third in the final standings. The victory in the womens PGS in Bansko goes to Elisa Cafont from Italy, and second place was taken by Tsubaki Miki from Japan.
